The arms of Bigland quarterly impaling WIlkins and Weir in colored enamels and gilt within a gilt cartouche and trailing blossoms, an inscription in the mantling reads DEUT 8TH 7-8-9-10, the sides with flower sprays, ear-shaped handle

Lot Essay

D.S. Howard (op. cit. (vol. i), p. 508, notes that this unusual inscription refers to the verses in Deuteronomy that describe land big with grain and flowing with milk and honey. The arms impale both first and second wives of Ralph Bigland, Somerset Herald 1759.
