The birds perched on hollow treestump bases beside green stems, possbily for use as taperholders, their beaks open as if singing, their folded wings picked out in green, black, and tones of sepia over blue tails

Lot Essay

A very similar pair was in the Garbisch collection, also from Philip Suval, and sold by Sotheby's at Pokety Farms, 22 May 1980, lot 281, where the catalogue refers to an ormolu-mounted pair from the collection of René Fribourg sold Sotheby's London 17 October 1963, lot 754.
