Standing on brown rockwork bases with heads turned, each with one yellow webbed foot pulled up under his breast and beady black eyes looking alertly forward, the yellow beaks with black triangles at their ends and incised detailing underneath; feather details picked out in a colorful enamel palette and the chests and underbellies pink, now mounted on later European ormolu bases

Lot Essay

W.R. Sargent, op. cit., p. 169 illustrates a plain white pair of "...these...graceful and elegant ducks" in the Copeland collection and cites 18th century inventory and sales records for the type, including an enamelled pair in the collection of the French artist Francois Boucher.
