Lot Essay

West Wycombe Park, Buckinghamshire, is infamous for its association with the Hellfire Club, run by the home's owner Sir Francis Dashwood. Its membership included both men and women, and its toasts were often 'blasphemous and... revolting'. This particular view is possibly from an 1803 engraving by J. Grieg after W. Hanman for The Beauties of England and Wales. See Howard and Ayers, op. cit., p. 270 and Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, vol. II, p. 560 for a further discussion.
