Lot Essay

Matthew Martin captained the Marlborough, at Canton 1716. D.S. Howard, op. cit., vol. I, p. 176, relates that for saving his ship and its very valuable cargo on the return journey Martin was awarded a "magnificent" jewel-encrusted gold medal and 1000 pounds, a quite significant sum at the time.
