Of footed oval form, both the tureen and cover painted front and back with a roundel centering the arms of Nisbett below the motto VIS FOTIBUS ARMA, flanked by entwined strap handles with berried foliate terminals, the finial formed as a flowerhead

Lot Essay

Though it is unclear which branch of the Nisbit(t) family this service belongs to, it was most likley made for George Nisbett of Cairnhill or his son John, who married the daughter of Captiain Neil McArthus. See D.S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, p. 332.
