Lot Essay

The attribution of this drawing to Folli, half-brother of Ventura di Salimbeni and Francesco Vanni and favoured pupil of Alessandro Casolani, is traditional. The mannered physiognomy of the Saint Michael does resemble figures in other drawings by the artist, such as the Madonna and Child with Saints in the Uffizi, Florence (A. Bagnoli, 'Alcuni disegni sicuri du Sebastiano Folli', in Per A.E. Popham, Parma, 1981, p. 104, fig. 5), but an attribution to a Neapolitan artist such as Micco Spadaro could also be considered.
