Lot Essay

The Master of the Egmont Albums was identified and named by Philip Pouncey based on the drawings once in the album of John Perceval, 1st Earl of Egmont (1683-1748), now in the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven. Nicole Dacos suggests that the artist can be identified as Dirck Hendricksz. Centen, active in Naples in the late 16th Century.
The present drawing was in the Dezallier d'Argenville's collection with an attribution to Hendrick Goltzius, with whom the Master of the Egmont Albums is frequently confused.
