The attribution to Fragonard was confirmed to the previous owner by Eunice Williams. Miss Williams dates the drawing to the 1770s, noting the influence of landscapes by northern artists such as Jacob van Ruisdael and in this regard comparing the drawing to the Landscape with flock and trees in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York (French Master Drawings from the Pierpont Morgan Library, exhib. cat., Paris, Louvre, and New York, Pierpont Morgan Library, 1993-1994, no. 70).
