Lot Essay
Goodwin painted Rye a few times, but enjoyed above all the view from the church tower:
'Went to Rye, my first visit for a long time. Town full of Khaki. Had a look at the town from top of church tower. I had never seen it from this point of view, and thought when I saw it - "What a fool I had been not to have gone up there before." I am not sure if my forte is not this, of painting from high altitudes. Most of my work done in this way has been my best.' (Diary, 1915).
