Lot Essay

This sketch was probably made at Southwold, Suffolk, where Southall painted a number of beach scenes. For a similar example, see the exhibition catalogue, p. 66, no. F2. These subjects tended to be executed in tempera on silk, the medium used here.

The sketch of a horse's head is probably a study for an unidentified portrait of a girl on horseback of which there is a photograph in the Witt Library.
