Lot Essay

Southall made many visits to Italy, the first being in 1883, and he often painted its architecture and bustling life. Several examples were included in the 1980 exhibition, nos. F21 - F25, including a more finished view of San Giorgio Maggiore (F22, illustrated in the catalogue).
