Lot Essay

According to the inscriptions on the back of the drawings, these are studies for the panels of a writing desk, executed in 1895. Stylistically, the designs are comparable to 'The Mystic Burial', a watercolour of the same year. See the 1980 exhibition catalogue, p. 28, no. A9 (illustrated). All these works show the strong influence of early Italian painting.
