Lot Essay

The 'elderly man' is the figure of the father in 'Beauty receiving the White Rose' (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery), dated 1898-9. See the 1980 exhibition catalogue, no. B4 (illlustrated).

The studies of hands are for 'St Dorothea and her Sisters refusing to worship the Idol', dated 1901-2. See the 1980 exhibition catalogue, no. C1 (illustrated in colour, following p. 24.).

The study of armour is for 'The Mystic Burial', a watercolour of 1895. See the 1980 exhibition catalogue, p. 28, no. A9 (illustrated). This watercolour was sold at Christie's in London on 10 November 1988, lot 98. Another version, painted the same year in watercolour on a similar scale, was sold at Sotheby's, London, on 16 June 1982, lot 305.
