Lot Essay

Among the studies is a sketch for Southall's 'Portrait of Mrs C.G. Beale', dated 1914. This portrait and a more finished study were included in the 1980 exhibition, nos. E18 and E18 (i), the latter being illustrated in the catalogue.

Alice Beale (1846-1940) was Chairman of the House Committee of Birmingham University from 1902 to 1928. She was a sister of Joseph Chamberlain's second wife and a cousin of his first. Her husband, Charles, bequeathed the important 'Beale Collection of Birds' to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
