Lot Essay

The finished portrait of J. Archibald Kenrick, dated 1922, was included in the 1980 exhibition, no. H4 (illustrated in catalogue). Southall had also painted the sitter's father, John Arthur Kenrick, in 1913 (1980 exhibition no. H3, illustrated in catalogue). Although the portraits are separated by nine years, they were conceived as a pair, having a similar format and identical frames. The Kenricks were one of Birmingham's most distinguished families.
