Lot Essay

'Waiting for the Breeze' has not been identified, but the fishermen are comparable to those in 'Up from the Sea', a painting of 1920 in the Castle Museum, Nottingham (1980 exhibition, no. F5, illustrated in catalogue).

'A Bucket of Salt Water', for which the second drawing is a study, is a tempera painting of 1912 in the Manchester City Art Gallery.

Both drawings may well have been made at Southwold, on the Suffolk coast, which inspired many of Southall's beach and maritime subjects.
