Lot Essay

The particular perspective taken by the artist in this work gives the spectator a broad view of the Dam in the early 20th Century. The monumental 18th Century building to the right of the war memorial 'Naatje van de Dam' was called the Commandanthuis, housing the commander of the Stadswacht, or city guards, a unit that no longer exists today. The neo-classical building was an eye catching structure up to 1912, defining the Dam's appearance together with the Royal Palace and Nieuwe Kerk. In 1912 the building was destroyed.
