Lot Essay

For his cityscapes Kees Maks found, amongst others, his inspiration at the amusement and cultural centre of Amsterdam since the late 19th century: the Rembrandt square. Due to its turrets and half round form above the entrance, the Rembrandt Theatre is clearly recognizable. The theatre was formerly known as Hofbal, but a fire destroyed the building. The building to the left is Cafè De Kroon.
