The artist was an autodidact who started painting because of his immense admiration for the old masters. Not being able to makes ends meet by painting alone, he would keep his job with a firm in drugstore products, only painting in his spare time. Therefore and due to his precise way of painting his oeuvre remained rather small. From the late 1920's on Ouwersloot was seen as a typical Dutch example of Nieuwe Zakelijkheid, with a certain preference for nocturnal scenes. The present small collection of works by Jan Ouwersloot shows street scenes of his home town Amsterdam, where he moved in 1923. His kindred spirits Ger Gerrits and Johan van Hell would paint prosaic street scenes in a more stylized form. Ouwersloot's paintings are done more realistically. His subjects are always topographically correct. (C. Blotkamp e.a., Magie en Zakelijkheid. Realistische schilderkunst in Nederland 1925-1945, Zwolle 2000, p. 267)
