A Collection of Works by Jan Ouwersloot (Dutch, 1902-1975) (Lots 64-69) In the pre-war years, Jan Ouwersloot was a well respected member of De Onafhankelijken, the artist's society which was very important for Dutch art at the time. The artist was an autodidact who started painting because of his immense admiration for the old masters. Not being able to makes ends meet by painting alone, he would keep his job with a firm in drugstore products, only painting in his spare time. Therefore and due to his precise way of painting his oeuvre remained rather small. From the late 1920's on Ouwersloot was seen as a typical Dutch example of Nieuwe Zakelijkheid, with a certain preference for nocturnal scenes.The present small collection of works by Jan Ouwersloot shows street scenes of his home town Amsterdam, where he moved in 1923. His kindred spirits Ger Gerrits and Johan van Hell would paint prosaic street scenes in a more stylized form. Ouwersloot's paintings are done more realistically.
