CIRCA 1901, STRUCK TWICE WITH MAKER'S MARK SC ONLY
Oval, on four scroll feet, with pierced vine-leaf border and chased rim, with two leaf-capped bracket handles, the field engraved with a ship in coastal waters, with Russian Imperial arms and Russian inscription, marked on base, the engraving signed with the initials KS
24 in. (61 cm.) long
91 oz. (2,850 gr.)
The inscription translates as 'Squadron Battleship Emperor Nicolas I 1901'

Lot Essay

The Imperator Nikolai I, was one example of the Imperator Nikolai II class of iron clad battleships built in the 1880's. It was built at the Galerniy yard in St. Petersburg and launched in 1889, being commissioned into the Imperial Russian navy in 1891. Displacing some 9,700 tons the Nikolai I saw action in the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-05. She was surrendered after the Battle of Tsushima and became part of the Japanese navy before being decommissioned in 1918 to be used as a target ship.
