Frederick III (1831-1888) German Emperor and King of Prussia was the eldest son of Emperor William I of Germany. In 1858 he married Princess Victoria, eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The couple had eight children. A heavy smoker, Frederick developed incurable cancer of the larynx. When his father died in 1888 at the age of ninety-one, Frederick was already gravely ill and ruled for just ninety-nine days before he too died at the age of fifty-six. He was succeeded by his son Emperor William II.
