A GERMAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER, NIELLO, 'GEM' SET AND CUT GLASS CUP AND COVER
BY ALEXANDER SCHÖNAUER, HAMBURG, CIRCA 1890
The hobnail cut-glass bowl engraved with a coat-of-arms, on circular base, nielloed with sea creatures and with eight shell feet, the domed base with eight panels chased and engraved with foliage, alternately set with cast floral sprays set with pearls and mother-of-pearl medallions, the stem cast and chased with sea-creatures and laurel leaves, set with a band of semi-precious stones rising to knop formed of shells, the cover topped by a sailing ship on a violent sea, flying the enamelled flag of Germany and three smaller enamelled flags of Hamburg, the rim with a band of applied coral branches and semi-precious stones set within trailing foliage below chased and engraved foliage, flying-fish, shells and crabs. the rim engraved 'A. Schoenauer - Fecit'
