Lot Essay

This vine-wreathed sideboard, with medallioned trophies emblematic of agriculture and the chase, is richly carved in the Elizabethan fashion promoted by Great Exhibitions of the mid-19th century. Its triumphal arched mirror bears the arms of John Scott, 3rd Earl of Eldon, who succeeded to the Encombe estates in 1854.

This sideboard is labelled by the little recorded T. Woodgate of High Holborn, who appears to have specialised in selling both antique and modern furniture in the 'antiquarian' taste. Woodgate subsequently entered into partnership with an Italian emigré Signor Vacani (see lot 33).
