Lot Essay

The arch-crested sofa, with elegant plinth-supported and herm-tapered legs, reflects the antique/Roman fashion popularized by Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co., Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterers Guide, 1788. Designed en suite with the card-tables (Lots 48 and 49), it is also japanned in the Etruscan vase fashion popularized in the 1770s by George III's court architect Robert Adam (d.1792).
