Lot Essay

The table-top celebrates lyric poetry with lyre-playing Apollo depicted in company with the Muses of Artistic Inspiration on Mt. Parnassus. It's scalloped oval form corresponds to the mid-18th century picturesque fashion as featured on a japanned miniature tea-table painted in Amsterdam in 1743 by the decorative artist Jurriaan Buttner (N. Dekking ed., Japanese Influence of Dutch Art; Imitation and Inspiration, Amsterdam, 1991, fig.43).
