Joachim Pissarro has confirmed the authenticity of this work.
Pissarro's depictions of rural scenes during the 1880s, focussing on the peasants and labourers around Pontoise and Eragny, communicate the simplicity and nobility of his subject matter and reflect 'that majestic tranquillity, that solemn melancholy which envelops the forms and the creatures of the fields' (R. Thompson, Camille Pissarro, London, 1990, p. 81).
The present work closely relates to other compositions of the same subject and raises an interesting debate over its date of execution. These similarities in both motif and style to La traite des vaches, Eragny (Pissarro & Venturi, no. 1395) would suggest that the present work was also executed in Eragny circa 1884. However, the differences in composition between the two works are revealing, leading Christopher Lloyd to surmise that this work may well pre-date P.&V.1395 by several years, suggesting that it was executed in Pontoise circa 1880.
