Lot Essay

The present drawing belonged to Melanie Schiele (1886-1974), the artist's second sister. Schiele had two other sisters, Elvira, the oldest (1884-1933), and Gertrude (1894-1979), who was the youngest and a very pretty girl. Melanie was a clerk for the Austrian railways and married Gustav Schuster, who was similarly employed. The couple had no children, and the present work was passed on to the sister of Gustav Schuster.
