Lot Essay

This work is sold with a photo-certificate from Isabelle Rouault.

The provenance of this gouache is extremely distinguished. The work was acquired by the mother of the present owner directly from Dr Maurice Girardin, the legendary collector whose pivotal donation to the City of Paris (accepted after his death in 1953) provided the foundation for the collection of the Palais de Tokyo. In 1920, he signed an exclusive contract with Marcel Gromaire, allowing the artist a steady income; with the same generosity, he helped Maria Blanchard, and was amongst the most committed supporters of Georges Rouault.
