Lot Essay

This work is sold with a photo-certificate from David McNeil.

This self-portrait is one of the most lyrical drawings which Chagall executed during his second stay in Paris. Using blue crayon as his medium, Chagall draws this very expressionistic portrait of himself, inspired by the Fauves' lesson of defining form by colour. During this time in Paris, Chagall succeeded Eugène Zack in his studio no. 101 Avenue d'Orléans, where the artist and his family remained until the end of 1925.

This humble depiction of himself contrasts with Chagall's artistic success at the time. At this point, Chagall was a leading figure in the Ecole de Paris and his reputation was publicly established with the large exhibition comprising 115 of his works at the Galerie Barbazanges-Hodebert in December 1924, entitled L'oeuvre de Marc Chagall, 1908-1924.
