Lot Essay

A closely related rectangular 'straight-edge' tray marked by Henry Clay (d. 1812), the leading the papier-mâché japanners of King Street, Covent Garden, whose business was established there in 1802 is preserved at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery & Museums (Y. Jones, Georgian & Victorian Japanned Wares of the West Midlands, Wolverhampton, 1982, p. 107, cat. no. 239). Another chinoiserie-decorated, straight-edge tray bears the mark of the Wolverhampton japanner Thomas Illidge, circa 1810 (ibid., Ex25, p. 89).
