This chair form, with 'curricle' back elegantly scrolled from the front rails, reflects the French antique or Grecian fashion that was popular around 1800. Related chairs, also with robust reeded legs but lacking paterae, are illustrated in M. Jourdain, Regency Furniture, London, 1965, rev. ed., fig. 95, p.54. A pair similar to the latter, also attributed to Gillows, was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 20 September 2001, lot 110.
