Lot Essay

Founded in 1870, J. Chiurazzi & Fils specialised in the reproduction of antique sculptures - particularly those dug up in excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum which were then moved to the Museo Nazionale, Naples. Their 1910 catalogue gives a clear indication of the ambitious breadth of their production ranging from small table top bronzes to much larger full-scale multi-figured compositions. The bronze horse on offer here, is one such example and is based on the generic model of the pacing horse most famously popularised by the four life-size horses of San Marco, Venice.
