Lot Essay

Hadlow Castle, near Tonbridge, Kent, was built circa 1835 by its owner Walter May in a Gothic style, reminiscent of William Beckford's Fonthill Abbey. Fonthill was surely the model as the tower is also octagonal in section. The Castle and its contents were sold in 1946 and all but the Tower was demolished.
