The following twenty lots come from Culham Court, Henley-on-Thames. Chester Jones oversaw the decorative scheme at Culham in the late 1990s. Jones is well known for having been a managing director at Colefax & Fowler: he headed one of six design teams there in the 1980s and wrote a book on the firm, Colefax & Fowler: The Best in English Decoration (London, 1998). Having originally studied art and architecture, he practised as an architect before becoming an interior decorator. This architectural foundation later proved useful when Jones began his own independent design practice, after leaving Colefax & Fowler. Many of his successful projects since then have involved restoring and redecorating 18th and 19th century interiors. Jones had an immediate understanding of the architectural heritage of the interiors he took on. Culham Court is a Palladian mansion designed for Robert Michell by Sir William Chambers (1722-1796) in the late 1770s. When redesigning the interiors of Culham, Jones was encouraged by the new owners to create an interior that would complement both the house and their love of modern British art. Jones' answer was to produce an interior scheme at once harmonious yet dramatically modern in its neo-classical setting. He juxtaposed modern art and earlier pieces inside the classical proportions of the Palladian interior. Hence Jones radically diverged from the normal tendency for historical reconstruction, which involves only using items contemporary to the age of the house. Some of the Culham Court lots were designed by Chester Jones himself, such as lot 1112, a pair of monumental white-painted armchairs. Equally, Jones sourced antiques that he felt would tie in with the modernist scheme he had created. He chose restrained and elegant 18th and early 19th century pieces he knew would blend well with the minimalism of the interior's modern tone. One example is lot 1104, a pair of Regency white-painted and parcel-gilt sofas, which Jones upholstered with a bespoke striped fabric for the drawing room at Culham. This fabric was also used for the curtains in the same room. The following 20 lots demonstrate how the grand 18th-century architectural setting of Culham Court was ingeniously modernised and updated by Chester Jones so as to accommodate a relaxed and comfortable form of contemporary living.
