Lot Essay
The table's form, pattern of brass-inlay and feet follow an example formerly in the Wilfred Evill collection, sold Sotheby's, London, 12 July 1963, lot 99. The latter table was richly mounted with cut-brass panels and elaborate ormolu mounts. Another pedestal table with an octagonal specimen marble top and identical paw feet is at Blair Castle, Perthshire and was suppled to John, 4th Duke of Atholl for Blair Castle by the Tenterden Street cabinet-maker, George Bullock. It was invoiced in 1814 as 'An Ebony stand enriched with inlaid Brass and Bronze ornaments for specimens of marble...' The feet used are also identical to those used on a wine-cooler supplied by Bullock for the use of the exiled Emperor Napoleon whilst at Longwood House, St. Helena, now in the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Bournemouth (C. Wainwright et al., George Bullock: Cabinet-maker, London, 1988, p. 66-7, no. 7).
Similar gilt-plaster feet also feature on a table by George Bullock illustrated in Blairman's 2004 Catalogue, no. 3. The latter was possibly included in Christie's sale of Bullock's Finished Stock, Christie's, London, 3-5 May 1819, day 3, lot 86.
