Each with a rectangular seat upholstered in striped material, the rails decorated with brass mouldings, the pierced back centred by four uprights joined by a lozenge, on square tapering legs joined by a H-shaped stretcher, the stretchers possibly later (2)

Lot Essay

This type of elegant brass-enriched dining-chair was developed in the 1790s, and various examples can be found in virtually all the Romanov palaces and in the collections of the Russian élite. A sofa with conformingly decorated back was in the Russian Imperial Collections, illustrated in G.K. Loukomski, Mobilier et Décoration des Anciens Palais Impèriaux Russes, Paris, 1928, pl.XLVIII.
