Lot Essay

These hall chairs, with their Grecian tablet top rail and sabre legs, can be related to chairs illustrated in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, plate XIX, fig. 4 and plate XLVI, fig. 2. A similar pair of hall chairs were sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 11 April 1991, lot 49.
