Lot Essay

The harsh realities of life in Syria pushed artists towards using expressionistic language in their paintings. Verisimilitude was not sought, but rather the subjects were presented as they felt rather than as they appeared. In the work of Fateh Moudarres, one of the most prominent of this group, the faces in his crowds are the faces of children, repeated and distorted to demonstrate their tragedy, executed in a broad style and in vivid colour.
