Roberto Rossellini, the famed Italian film producer and husband of actress, Ingrid Bergman was invited to India by Jawharlal Nehru to make the documentary India in 1957. Although married to Ingrid Bergman at the time he embarked on a scandalous affair with the young and beautiful Sonali Das Gupta, who at the time was employed in the film industry.
They eventually married and Rossellini adopted her son, Gil.
While Rossellini was based in India he was introduced to and became friends with the prolific painter Maqbool Fida Husain.
