Lot Essay

The set of this photograph was created for a magazine illustration. Art director, Alexander Liberman wrote, 'We were planning a frontispiece for a farm issue [of House & Garden magazine] and Penn was asked to compose what to him would be the most symbolic picture of a farm kitchen.' (27th Annual of Advertising and Editorial Art, Art Directors Club, 1948, p. 169). The final picture included a model seated at left. It received an Art Directors Club Medal in 1948.
