Lot Essay

During the years 1891-1892 Hodgson produced almost a virtual Who's Who of the late Victorian art world in the form of portrait drawings, similar to this study of the painter Goodall, who specialised in Egyptian subjects. The linear draughtsmanship indicates that perhaps these portraits were intended as illustrations for articles on the art world; however it appears that they were never published.
