Lot Essay

Grant was a painter of hunting scenes as well as portraits. He began as a talented amateur, making it his profession in 1830 and becoming president of the Royal Academy in 1866. As the youngest son of the laird of Kilgraston, Perthshire his social connections and flattering style ensured his success and his 1840 portrait of Queen Victoria riding with Melbourne in Windsor Park made him one of the most fashionable portrait painters of the day.
