Lot Essay

Hicks was one of the few artists to rival William Powell Frith, R.A. (1819-1909) (see lot 46) as a painter of modern-life subjects. Although he later turned to portraiture, his early work included genre scenes and depictions of contemporary life such as the present drawings.
It has been suggested that the present drawings date from circa 1840.
