Lot Essay

Decorating the old font is a typical subject for James Lobley, who, despite a few recorded pictures in detailed Pre-Raphaelite style, exhibited many humorous genre subjects, often set in church interiors such as The Village Choir and Little Nell Leaving the Church painted in the manner of Thomas Webster and F. D. Hardy. Lobley lived at Brighouse, near Bradford and an exhibition of his work was held at Bradford Art Gallery in 1983.
