A painter of genre, landscape and historical scenes, becoming a commercial illustrator later in life, Brown lived in Nottingham and London and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1878 and 1902. The most significant works that he exhibited there were The Last Look, 1883 and Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra, taken prisoner by Aurelian, Emperor of Rome, 1885.
