Lot Essay

Samuel Sidley exhibited widely at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Grosvenor Gallery, and gained frequent commissions for official and presentation portraits. In this domestic composition he shows his daughter seated at the table with her christening mug. In the Victorian 'language of flowers' the primrose and violets she has picked that morning signify early youth and a calm temper.
