Cottingham was primarily employed in restoration work for churches and cathedrals; however he also designed a small number of new buildings, of which Snelston Hall was one. The elaborately Gothic house was designed for John Harrison in 1828 but was demolished in 1951. Illustrations of the Hall can be found in J.B. Burke's A Visitation of Seats and Arms of the Noblemen and Gentlemen of Great Britain and Ireland, series 2, i, London, 1854, pp. 228, illustrated. For related drawings also see S. Jervis, 'Gothic Rampant; Designs by L.N. Cottingham for Snelston Hall', Victoria and Albert Museum Album no.3, London, 1984 pp. 323-331.
