Born in London and educated at Eton, Robertson studied art at South Kensington under Albert Moore. Although his wealthy background meant he did not have to earn a living as an artist, he painted throughout his life, working as an illustrator and costume designer, he also wrote several books and plays. His reminiscences, Time Was, London, 1931, contain an interesting and graphic account of the personalities of the 1890s and the rather sad bohemianism of Moore's last years. He was a much loved friend of Burne-Jones and a passionate supporter of the Pre-Raphaelites.
