George Howard enjoyed a wide circle of literary and artistic friends including Morris, Burne-Jones, Tennyson and Browning, who stayed with him at Naworth, his castle in Cumbria. In addition to being Chairman of the Trustees of the National Gallery for thirty years, Howard was an accomplished amateur painter who made frequent watercolour sketches when travelling abroad.
